I have coveted the 24-70mm lens for such a long time and have rented one a couple of times for special events. Finally, I accumulated enough credit card points and bookings (family, newborn and wedding shoots) so that I was able to justify the purchase. I received it on a Saturday, latched it into the camera immediately and shot more than 1,000 images with it in the ensuing week. Focus is super sharp, and the lens locks on to focus quickly with no noticeable motor noise. Coupled with the Canon 5D Mark III in Silent Shooting mode, I can photograph newborns without making a noise that may unsettle them; or I can shoot during the wedding ceremony without disturbing the proceedings. It is definitely a heavy beast, and I was quite tired after shooting with it for >6 hours at a wedding, but I suppose I would have been tired even without this fantastic lens!
It has a 82mm filter size, so unfortunately none of my existing filters will fit on it. I ordered a B&W 82mm UV filter immediately, just to protect the front element. It does come with a nice suede padded bag (which I probably won’t use much) and a pinch-type lens cap which is less likely to get knocked off than the caps that have the pinch mechanism on the outer edge. The hood also requires you to push a small button on the side to unlatch it. It’s easy to reverse the hood for use indoors. It also has a Lock so that you can latch it in the wide angle position and not worry about the lens accidentally extending. (I wish my 24-105mm L lens had this feature too.)
The combination of Canon 5D Mark III and 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is the professional standard (in the Canon world anyway…), and I can now take on photo shoots knowing that my equipment is not going to interfere with my creative vision.

Let me first qualify my review by stating that I have two 60D camera bodies and recognize the limitations that go with them. The closest comparision I own to this lense is the Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF), which is a $500 lense that I have owned and used as my primary zoom lense for several years. Ever since the new Canon 24 – 70 F/2.8 L came out, I regularly watched the price, waiting for it to drop. I finally pulled the trigger at the end of 2013 due to the $300 rebate about to expire and Amazon about to start taxing. After rebates and promotions, this lense cost me about $1670.
My primary reason for purchasing this lense is the hope of better autofocus performance than the Tamron lense was providing. I have always loved how well my 70 – 200 f/2.8L non-IS performs in autofocus for sports action shots and was hoping for something similar in a shorter focal range. Chromatically, both lenses are of great quality, so one will not notice a performance difference if all you do is still photos with them.
I have now tested the 24 – 70 f/2.8L in two events: (1) out door, daytime ultra distance running 50K to 100 Mile events. Needless to say, the lense performed almost flawlessly in the good light there. Very few photos were discarded due to being out of focus. The only bad ones were those in the shadows at the beginning of the race. (2) Indoor girls basketball under fluourescent lighted gym. In this case, there was a clear improvement over the Tamron lense, but still too many that I had to discard due to softness. I recognise the fact that my 60d camera might also be a limiting factor here. Perhaps next year, I will get a full-frame camera. Any feedback or suggestions are welcome.
Review of my experience with the Canon Rebate Process
Lense orded or 12/30/2013 for $1994 Lense arrived on time with two-day shipping several days later Rebate form and UPC code sent by certified mail on 1/8/2014 Rebate form arrived at CANON office in Memphis on 1/13/2014 Canon rebate funds mailed as American Express Debit Card ($300) on 1/23/2014 Debit card arrived a few days later and was spent to zero within several weeks. Last transaction was at a gas pump to permit me to run it down to zero without knowing the remaining funds.
Overall, it’s a great lense for $1670 and I intend to keep it. If I get the opportunity to try it out on a full frame camera in limited light conditions and see great results, I’ll increase the rating from 4 to 5 stars.

Please be forewarned. If you get this stellar lens, you may very well stop using the rest of your lenses with the exception of two lenses – the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L and the Canon 16-35 f2.8 L, if you have those. These three L lenses are what we call the famed “Canon Lens trinity”.
I have been a photographer (Intermediate) for the past 24 years. I have several Canon lenses in my arsenal. But this one beats them all for a few reasons:
1) The 24-70 focal range is what I need most times – travel, street photography, portraits, landscapes.
2) It is truly an all purpose/walkaround lens.
3) Carrying a camera backpack is no longer a tiring exercise only because it is just the camera and this lens with lightweight accessories.
4) This lens is incredibly sharp with a constant f2.8. There are no sweet spots, it is a sweet spot all the way through the two ends of the spectrum from 24 to 70.
5) Every picture that I took with this lens is phenomenal and I have received tons of compliments.
6) Solid build quality and very professional. You get what you pay for.
7) This is one of those products which you can just buy without any research whatsoever. Can never go wrong.
8) Works superbly with full frame cameras (I use a EOS 6D) as well as with APSC crop sensor cameras (I also have an EOS 7D)
I can go on and on, with my raving. I will stop here. If you are an amateur and own a Canon DSLR, this would be your best investment. If you are a professional, I bet you already have one! Enjoy.

I shoot with a 1DX Mark II and an EOS R and have for that last 5 years. I’ve always had the EF 16-35 and EF 70-200 and had always longed for the mid range, but found myself able to manage with cropping in on images or shooting in 4K for video (since both of my cameras crop in) to get some extra focal range. I’d be tormented as to whether to get the new RF 24-70 F2.8 or RF28-70 F2, but I really didn’t want to get rid of the 1DX because it has worked so well across photo and video for me and I just don’t need more than it can do right now. I wanted to invest in the newest lens tech, but was considering getting this EF24-70 just to retain the ability to use it on the 1DX even though I figured the upcoming R1 is on my radar. But then, alas, the price dropped to $1649 and it made it an easier decision. I was surprised that the build-quality of this actually seems superior to even the newest EF 16-35. I don’t know why this went on sale, as it’s not on sale anywhere else that I can tell. It’s a great value at $1649 and I’m happy I pulled the trigger. I was very unconvinced of a huge step up between the EF and RF lenses regarding image quality, so I think this all worked out wonderfully. Excited to put it to daily use in my travels (which are about 6 months out of the year!).

I’m a career photojournalist and bought the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens to fill that yawning gap between my 16-35 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. I’ve used this lens to shoot a variety of editorial, business, PR and party assignments. My impressions:
1. Dang, this sucker is expensive! I coughed up about $2200 with tax.
2. As everyone says, too bad it doesn’t have IS.
3. Somewhat chunky, but anyone who handles pro gear will hardly notice. One disappointment is that the front section slides forward 1-1/2 inches when zooming from 24mm to 70mm. I’m surprised this Canon upgrade didn’t incorporate an internal zooming mechanism like the 16-35 and 70-200. This weather-sealed lens uses a latch to lock at 24mm for travel and running around.
4. The lens analysis in DPreview.com is dead on: you see significant vignetting at f/2.8, but it settles down at f/4.0 and nearly disappears by f/5.6. Some minor barrel distortion.
5. Superb sharpness and contrast even at f/2.8, comparable to the legendary 70-200 f/2.8! Excellent color.
6. Truly superior lens flare control, even when shooting directly into light sources! Locking lens hood (included) is shallower than I prefer for optimal protection of that massive 82mm front element. My lens came with a standard snap-on lens cap; I replaced the Canon cap with a Fotodiox 05CAPT82x1 82mm Inner Pinch Lens Cap and it works nicely.
7. Close focusing is okay. Not macro quality, but close-ups at 70mm are acceptable, even at f/2.8.
Conclusion: this is a real workhorse that will remain attached to one of my full frame bodies from now on. Horribly expensive, Canon is charging all the market will bear. But since I will probably use it for the next decade, I’m not complaining–too much!
LOW LIGHT UPDATE: last week I had an assignment to shoot stills on the slasher/suspense movie set "Killing Mr. Right." I used this lens to shoot handheld existing light at f/2.8 the whole time. I was blown away with the razor sharp images! I was tap dancing right at the edge of usable existing light, but the photos turned out great! Yeah, I wish it had IS, but this lens is sharp enough to cut ya!
UPDATE 2: I’ve been using this lens for two years now. It is my "go-to" lens that usually remains glued to one of my 5D III bodies. Optically it as good as or superior to almost all fixed focal length lenses.

First let me explain the comment about contents. This item was ordered as NEW, directly from Amazon. However when received it was obvious the package had been opened and lens was used. Lens Hood was also missing (didn’t realize this some time later when it dawned on me there should have been one included). The factory UPC codes on the lens box was covered with what looked like blank address labels and the box was also sealed with one. I also noticed a slight "friction" noise when zooming, leading me to believe it had possibly been returned previously as defective. THE LENS: I received this just before taking a trip to Southern CA and was able to use it for a couple of weeks before having a chance to return. The noises I heard when zooming did not seem to have any effect on the results, luckily. This lens is tack sharp and takes beautiful pictures. Focus is fast and very accurate with this one too. Bought it to use on my 5D Mk II, but stuck it on my old Rebel also to see what kind of results it would give and it produced the best pictures yet from that smaller camera body as well. Just amazing clarity! If it weren’t for the issues with it being used and missing parts (lens hood) this would definitely be a keeper. Had to return for these reasons, but thinking about reordering soon. I wondered if the price was too high for this model of lens but after seeing the results and the fact it is an f2.8, I believe now it is well worth the price. I would highly recommend, just double check and make sure what you receive is truly a new lens as described!

This lens is better than version 1 in every way but 1. I didn’t realize it at first but the zoom protrude out instead of version 1 having internal zoom without protrusion. It isn’t a bit deal but slight annoying to unzoom (go back to wide) before packing. I was wondering what that “lock” switch was for and it clicks when I saw the lens zooming out physically. Lens cap and lens hood both both have firm locking mechanism (the lens hood won’t twist unless you press the little button).
Overall really happy with the lens but I am still getting used to the protrusion.
